The "Lifesavers" of Petro Eloy, Arizona

On Jan. 18, Petro Eloy General Manager Robert Warner was at home when a 911 call came in. It was 12:30 a.m., and there was a fire at his site. Upon arrival, he found a frightening scene: a truck engulfed in flames, emergency vehicles everywhere and many people scattered around the area, including a man without a shirt.

Given the 35-degree temperature, Robert asked the man why he didn’t have clothes on. He quickly learned the man’s name was Larry; the burning truck was his.

Larry lost everything. Possessions, including his wallet, phone, passport, tablet and clothes, were gone in the flames.

Robert knew he had to help, so he gave FMT Travis Duncan a $100 bill to buy Larry a sweatshirt, socks, flip flops and a jacket from the travel store. Once he was clothed, the two brought Larry into the office to warm up and call his wife to let her know what happened.

While Larry was on the phone with his wife, Shop PCM Alex Boe, Restaurant PCM Bill Avery, Travis and Robert took up a collection to buy Larry a hotel room for the next two nights. And the next morning, Robert picked Larry up and drove him to the Verizon store 25 miles away to get a new phone.

The team received the following heartfelt email from Larry:

“After my truck had a fire, Robert Warner helped me recover. He went above and beyond the basics to help me out, including arranging to get my load moved to another Landstar truck and taking me to get a new phone.

He and his staff showed true concern for me and the effect on my family. I want to thank him, his staff and TA/Petro for all the great help. Everybody treated me really well to get me through a few days and start putting my life back together.”

Larry’s wife is a custom woodworker. She created a unique candy dish for Robert and filled it with LifeSavers for Larry’s “lifesavers.”
